2024 Season

Three UK premieres, plus our first repertory season.

We’ve just announced our new productions for 2024, including the UK premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins(An OctoroonThe Comeuppance. This bitingly comic, strikingly timely satire will be directed by Eric Ting (Between Two Knees) and feature Yolanda Kettle (Patriots), Ferdinand Kingsley (Reacher), Tamara Lawrance (King Charles III), Katie Leung (Harry Potter) and Anthony Welsh (The Flatshare). 

Following this Polly Findlay (Assassins) directs Nathalie Armin (A Little Life), Phoebe Campbell (House of the Dragon), Liv Hill (The Serpent Queen), Liam Lau-Fernandez (School’s Out Forever), Lia Williams (Mary Stuart) and Susannah Wise (A Doll’s House) in Alma Mater by Kendall Feaver (The Almighty Sometimes) offering a sharp new look at the ever-growing generational divide between activists.

This summer Internationaal Theater Amsterdam’s new Artistic Director Eline Arbo directs her inventive stage adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s critically acclaimed “masterpiece” (The GuardianThe Years.

Following The Years will be the Almeida’s first ever repertory season: Angry and Young featuring two celebrated 20th century British plays, John Osborne‘s Look Back in Anger, directed by former Almeida Resident Director Atri Banerjee (The Glass Menagerie) and Arnold Wesker‘s Roots, directed by Diyan Zora (Tom Fool). 

Also announced

Sarah Gordon is the second recipient of the The Roger Michell Commissioning Fund. The annual fund, set up after the passing of director Roger Michell in 2021 with donations from his family and friends, will support an annual commission for a playwright with a fresh and unique perspective on the world to develop a play alongside the Almeida. Gordon’s previous plays include The Underdog (2020 Nick Darke Award, currently under development on attachment at the National Theatre).

Plus we recently announced a double bill of Almeida Young Company productions Lear Is Not Okay and Lessons taking place this March, which have been created in response to Yaël Farber’s production of King Lear.

Almeida Elsewhere

Alongside our 2024 season here at the Almeida, several of our productions are transferring to the West End and New York this year.

Sam Holcroft‘s A Mirror began performances at the Trafalgar Theatre in London’s West End this January, featuring Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education) and Geoffrey Streatfeild (Anatomy of a Scandal) reprising their original roles.

Our 2019 production of The Hunt transfers to St Ann’s Warehouse, New York this February, with Tobias Menzies (The Crown) returning to lead the cast.

Also in New York later this year will be Peter Morgan‘s Patriots and James Graham, Elton John and Jake Shear‘s Tammy Faye, both transferring to Broadway and directed by Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold.
